I just left Jamal’s house where I was called to by Jamal’s wife, Safia, after she witnessed the side effects of the radiation therapy he is currently receiving. He was having back spasms, shooting pain in his legs and bouts of vomiting. The living room has morphed into a bedroom or sorts, shared by anyone who wants to be around Jamal as he hasn’t been able to lay down to sleep in over a month. As such, Safia and the kids gravitate towards him, not wanting to leave him alone. The love and attachment Jamal’s children have for him is evident as they grow more and more inseparable.
Over the last couple months Jamal has spent his time recovering from the surgery performed in November. Unfortunately, a recent CT scan performed showed a fractured rib due to the cancer in his bones, an increase in size of a tumor growing in his iliac lymph node in his groin and cancer growth closer to nerves in his back. A follow-up MRI last week showed what the doctor said is major cause for concern; 2 tumors on his spine which have grown extremely close to his spinal cord that if left untreated, will eventually cause paralysis. They have began to treat these areas aggressively with daily radiation therapy. As you can imagine, this is causing him a lot of pain which is not easily alleviated, if at all.
As the days pass, some good and others not so much, we find ourselves wondering what is next. Watching Jamal fight this disease, we have so many more questions than answers and it is difficult to plan the next steps because we don’t know what tomorrow brings. Without faith in God, this would bring feelings of helplessness but we know that we are a part of larger plan that we may not understand, but trust God to see us through. Don’t forget about us. Don’t forget Jamal in your prayers. We ask you for your continued encouragement, support, prayers and kind words. Continue to spread the word about Jamal and his fight and stay on this journey with us.
You are appreciated.
